2009 Surly Long Haul Trucker
My 2009 Surly Long Haul Trucker, ordered in December 2008 and bought in early January. I ordered the Complete bike, and it is still mostly stock. What I’ve added are the fenders (Planet Bike Cascadia ATBs, silver), rear rack (generic), and front rack (Nitto M-12). I swapped out the stock tires (WTB Slickasaurus) with Panaracer Pasela TGs.
The Paselas have a great ride, great flat protection (1000 miles so far without a flat) and are pretty quiet. Great tires, and I expect I’ll continue to buy these. The only thing I’ve heard is that they are not very good for extended, fully-loaded touring. For that, some variety of Schwalbe Marathon cannot be beat.
The handlebar bag is a Velo Orange Campagne. Waterproof canvas, this bag is great. Holds everything I need for a day ride. Nice map case on top, too. I haven’t used it as part of a touring rig yet, but I imagine it would be great to keep valuables and snacks in while on tour.
In 2010 I swapped out the stock handlebars with 44cm Nitto Noodles. These bars have a million hand positions, all of them comfortable. They have this great curve between the tops and the hoods that makes riding on the tops actually comfortable. The ramps to the brake hoods are flat and long. The drops feel natural. Love the Noodles.
Lights are CatEye front and rear blinkies. I also have a NiteRider MiNewt USB Plus (not pictured) that usually stays on my helmet in the winter months.
